Like the old dinner plate someone tried to sell me in Beijing that they said was from the Tang Dynasty, or the old villages that have become tourist attractions, and are "restored to their original condition" but this time with a Dairy Queen.

You think English is easy?

Can you read these right the first time?

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present .

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row .

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting, I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England nor French fries in France .

Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indixes? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital, ship by truck and send cargo by ship, have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be
the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill-in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't Buick rhyme with quick?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is UP.

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or toward the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the
secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. We use something to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers, and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often

messes things UP.

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.
We could go on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so: Time to shut UP.!
Oh... one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

As fate would have it, I will be bringing my boyfriend (to whom I am engaged) to my work Christmas party. This means a lot of introductions. There are 25 of us in the company and with spouses and friends and the like, I'm likely to make 50+ introductions.

I hate the word "Fiance". I hate it like I hate the word "nipple".

I need a new word that we can boost into predominance as the commonly accepted term before next Wednesday.

I have faith in you.

GO!

This may have been posted before, so what, it's funnyy:

Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year's winners. Read them carefully. Each is an artificial word with only one letter altered to form a real word.

1. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

2. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

3. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, show little sign of breaking down in the near future.

4. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

5. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

6. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

7. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

8. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.

9. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

10. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.

11. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

12. Glibido: All talk and no action.

13. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

14. Arachnoleptic fit(n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

15. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

16. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

And the pick of the lot:
17. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.
recipe for Pacos

ingredients:
pancake mix
water
leftovers
syrup, or other condiments, to taste

Directions:
Use the pancake mix and water to make a whole bunch of pancakes - more than you can just eat for breakfast.
For the rest of the day, grab a pancake off the stack and use it instead of a tortilla to hold a hot dog, cold spaghetti, ice cream, peanut butter, cauliflower, huevos, or whatever you have lying around.
Depending on how you stuff them, Pacos are good with hot sauce, relish, chocolate sauce, hollandaise, or whipped cream.

I came up with 'mehlicious' on my own a few moments ago when watching the England vs Sweden world cup 2nd round match. Unfortunately, a check of google finds that someone else used this term in 2003. Plus someone else reinvented it in this tribe in 2005, I think it was Q. And someone else used it at some comcast personal website or something. And this posting makes four times it has been used on the web...so far.

def 1. a feeling in the inner circle of a virtual or actual social group that someone outside that group needs to move on, especially in an internet forum.

ety. A sepling of 'weird'.

ex 1. "That alt is making me feel werid."
ex 2. "I get a werid vibe from that post."
ex 3. "Are you getting that werid feeling again?"

Note also the similarity to 'derision'. A possibly derisive remark...although not necessarily so as one can get that werid feeling without malice.

The phenomenon that happens the longer you live with roommates where when one of you needs to do laundry, the washing machine is in use by someone else. Everyone washes at once.

Fecetious

Someone wrote asking me what this word means and, after I stopped laughing, I defined it as such:

Derived from the word "feces", meaning FULL OF SHIT.

Alternately, you might use it in place of "shitty".

Ex: "Man, was that interview ever fecetious!"

...but it's not. it's a phenomenom. what do people mean when they say or write this word?

my guess:
the story behind how someone got their nickname.
eg. "he was just laying there in the parking lot, so we ran over him. called him 'bumpy' ever since."

i'd like to recommend an excellent new book called The Meaning of Tingo by Adam Jacot de Boinod. it's about unusual words fro mlanguages around the world with a special focus on words that have no exact equivalent in English... ought to provide inspiration for us here to coin new words to fit various meanings!

Powerlink (v.) -- To coerce someone into a tribe by using a link that automatically joins them, whether they want to or not. For example, I was forcelinked into Boot Camp General, for no good reason at all.

Here's an example of forcelinking: http://losangeles.tribe.net/template/JoinTribe.vm?tribeid=2fdc0b7d-2d1f-4ceb-ae7a-06709335cdda
